Key Web Resources
The acknowledged primary resource for general Jewish genealogy is: Jewishgen

The JewishGen subdivision of most interest to Brest researchers is the Belarus Special Interest Group (SIG).

The Dorot Jewish Division of the New York Public Library provides Internet access to images of a large collection of Yizkor (Memorial) Books, including a number of important Yizkor Books from Brest and the Brest region. The books are written in Hebrew and/or Yiddish. English translations of some of these are available at the JewishGen Yizkor Book Project.

A primary source for tracking immigration to the U.S. is the Ellis Island Foundation website. Many researchers search the Ellis Island data using these One-Step Forms provided by Dr. Stephen Morse.

The primary on-line source for Holocaust victims and their families is the Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names, compiled and maintained by Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority on the basis of submissions of descendents and others. This organization urgently requests help in collecting names of victims: The Yad Vashem Names Recovery Campaign.

The Family Tree of the Jewish People is a joint project of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS), Beth Hatfutsoth -- The Museum of the Jewish People, and JewishGen.

The Israel Genealogical Society (IGS) maintains this list of Israeli Burial Societies.

As much of western Belarus was once part of Poland, there is considerable overlap of the Polish-centric Miriam Weiner Roots to Roots Foundation work, of which the Jewish Records Indexing (JRI) Poland project is a vital component. Searches of the 1929 Polish Business Directory can provide valuable information about the communities of the Brest area.

There are many websites listing genealogy resources of particular types and for particular regions; for example, this one about Europe.

This 2002 Jewishgen article, Belarusian Archives and Other Resources Regarding Family History and Personal Genealogy is a good place to start your research.
