Overview
This material is based on interviews of Dov Bar conducted in Israel by Hannah Kadmon starting in 2009, plus subsequent follow-ups. Dov made frequent reference to his extensive, well-organized repository of historical documents, memorabilia, and family history, plus his 1997 visit to Volchin (see photos, here) with other Volchiners and descendents.

Dov's interests fall into two areas: Recalling pre-war Volchin and documenting the Holocaust in Volchin and neighboring communities

Dov has spent decades documenting the Holocaust in the region. The summation of his efforts can be seen here.

Dov's stories of pre-war Volchin in these pages are a series of glimpses of pre-war Volchin life rather than a continuous narrative. These have been largely reproduced as such in these pages, with the addition of extensive links, so viewers may explore the material in the order they wish.

Conventions of this Section
Except as noted, the words are Dov's --direct quotes and paraphrases-- adjusted from translation from Dov's Hebew by Hannah Kadmon toward idiomatic English by the editor. For clarity, quotation marks and other similar indications are omitted from this section, except where Dov quotes someone else. Supplementary material, including introductions, explanations, links to other pages, and graphics, has been added by the editor to amplify and provide context. The textual additions can almost always be distinguished by third-person references to Dov.

In general, families are identified primarily by their father's name. Married women are, for purposes of classification, usually included in their husbands' family.

Editor's Notes: toward idiomatic English: These adjustments attempted to balance clarity to English readers while still retaining the flavor of Dov's expression.
