Shmuel
Englander was born in Volchin around 1920. Died 18 March 2004.

Shmuel Englander |
His father, Yitzchak was then the owner of a bakery in Volchin
and Shmuel helped him there. (Some goyim called Shmuel Englander Itzkovich because his father was Itzik.) On Fridays, his parents erected a stand in the market square to sell the challah they baked for the Sabbath.
Shmuel was conscripted into the Soviet army in Summer, 1941, and thereby escaped the Holocaust. Shmuel's family,
who stayed in Volchin, did not survive.
Shmuel was one of our group of Israelis who visited Volchin in 1997.
Later, from memory, he drew a map of pre-war Volchin.
Berl Stavsky married Shmuel
Englander's sister.

Shmuel, whose sight has lately declined, as a result of his weakening heart, was “busy” with hospitalizations in hospitals, hospitalizations that did not succeed in correcting that which needed repair. Now Shmuel is given over to his house and “lives on pills”. This morning, when I spoke with him, his mood was good. And he related to me that he, following on the heels of his clear memories of his childhood that lately, occupy his mind, decided to write stories on various topics of Volchin, things that happened, of course. These words of his were received by me as good news. I encouraged him with my words, that he should continue on this path. Because writing, from my experience which is not meager, causes happiness in life and happiness bestows health on the man who is involved with it. Indeed, happiness heals the body.
