We drove from Brest-Litovsk to Volchin which took half an hour in the car.
We arrived at the couple's home. They lived in a small house, with three bedrooms, lounge, kitchen, complete with fridge and gas cooker. Carpets on the floor, television, video, radiators to keep the house warm in winter, shower.
I remembered Volchin with no electricity, no water in the houses, and the houses themselves were very small.
We sat down and had a cup of tea and then I opened the suitcase full of things I had brought for them: nice clothes for them all; toys for the children, sweets, crayons and quite a lot of food, soap, talcum powder -- all the things we take for granted and that they had never seen. I wish I had taken a video camera with me so I could have captured the faces of the children as I gave them the things.
