I know about the square in Volchin. My mother told me of her wedding that lasted 7 days in the square. It was like the religious festival. People came from all the neighboring villages and stayed in Volchin all this time. Even Goyim came and the whole village was there to celebrate.
It is almost certain the market was not active on Shabbat.
Shmuel Englander told me that on Fridays, his parents used to erect a stand in the market square and sell challah for Sabbath, that were baked in their bakery.
Such a water well --as near the synagogue-- existed in the past in the municipality square. They drew water out of it by means of a pail on a rope. My great grandfather, Meir Shevach Stavsky, fell into this well.

Editor's Notes: challah: the traditional, much-beloved braided egg bread, used in Jewish observance. In 2007 I observed a twisted loaf was commonly available in the region. It was called challah, and the appearance was right, but the taste was disappointing. |
