Conscription
Shmuel Englander left Volchin to enroll in the Red Army in Wysokie Litewskie a short time before the Nazi invasion of June 22, 1941.

A friend who joined him at the conscription bureau was disqualified and returned disappointed to Volchin, later losing his life in the Holocaust.

Shmuel found himself with the Red army in the depths of Russia and survived.

Editor's Notes: Dov points out that Shmuel's story paralleled that of Motel Kolner of Wysokie Litewskie, whose memoir is found on this website about Wysokie. He, too was conscripted in Wysokie, at about the same time. Like Shmuel, probably, he debarked at the Wysokie train station about 5km north of the town, and found himself in the interior of Russia. Thus, like Shmuel, he survived, while his family who remained were murdered by the Nazis. Both men married women they met in Russia, had children, and eventually emigrated to Israel.
