The Oldest Known Synagogue Seventeenth-century Brest was located at the present site of the Brest fortress, to the south and west of today's city center. The artist-architect Erik Dahlberg (b.1625, d.1703) sketched his observation of Brest under siege in May 1657. An engraving based on his sketch appeared in Freiher Samuel von Pufendorf's book Histoire du regne de Charles Gustave roy de Suede: comprise en sept commentaires enrichis de tailles douces (History of the reign of Charles Gustov, King of Sweden, composed of 8 commentaries enriched by copperplate engravings), published in 1697 by Christophle Riegel in Nuremburg.
