II-b. An Account of Mutual Aid

By: A. Bulotzki

Mutual Aid has been organized thanks to the initiative of teacher Tzvibl and the Principal. Despite the fact that the pupils misunderstood the idea behind it, we can see today that action is effective. The first step of the founders proved that the idea was realized in an unforeseen speed. We started with selling tea to the pupils during recess. The pupils contributed a kettle, cups and teaspoons. That was a good sign because all pupils participated in this project. This selling of tea brought in good money to the “Aid” fund.

In December we thought that sewing of collars, handkerchiefs and sandals would be a good source of income. After a two months’ work, we had to discontinue this venture because of very few customers.

We started book-binding, but it was discontinued due to technical problems. We still hope that this project will be renewed and will benefit also the library. There are many books waiting to be repaired.

Despite all the hardships, Mutual Aid managed, during its short existence, to collect 256 zehuvim. Out of this sum, 180 z. were spent on sending sickly pupils to the “Tuz” resort, 40 z. – support, 20 z. on medications. In addition some girls got hats, sandals and books. During the year, pupils got loans of 57 z. That was last year.

This year we started our activity late but intensively. We opened a shop which was not very successful. The pupils were not interested. They bought only notebooks and some small odd things. We had some receipts from the parties held in Hanukkah. Mutual Aid got 50 z. from the buffet and the lottery.

To spread the idea of mutual aid and increase its income, we decided to charge a monthly tax of 10 prutot from every pupil. The receipts - 150 z.

Expenses of this year: 50 z. – support, 60 z. – loans. Some pupils got hats, notebooks, writing pads and books.

The results of our activity are not satisfying but we hope that the idea of mutual aid will gradually penetrate the hearts of all our friends and we will to be proud of our activity.
