II-a. The Value of Mutual Aid
By: Elka Krein
After a long interval the activity of
Mutual Aid has been resumed.
Unfortunately there are sceptics among us who say that
Mutual Aid was never there in our school and will never last. They criticize but do not act to repair. It is easier to destroy than to build. Everybody knows how to criticize, to break, to shatter, but what about building?
Those who jeer at those who work seriously are not many. Still even few such people can damage the process of building, when the building does not have yet a sound foundation. This foundation considered by the sceptics as about to collapse, is one of the main pillars of society.
The value of mutual aid is great in all aspects of life. We can follow that in the human History.
A person, according to one of the Greek philosophers, is a social creature. He is bound to society and society has demands which he must adhere to. If the individual carries out what he the demands of society, society will reward him.
A person fights to attain all he needs for his existence. The best ammunition for this fight can be found only in social life, in sharing work. If he fights alone, he is doomed. Victory is secured only when there is mutual aid, helping to develop and progress. If we study those who greatly help others, we see that they are strong and successful. The mutual aid practiced among them, lengthens their life span, develops their mental abilities and contributes to the progress of humanity. Those who lack this social perception are doomed to failure.
Mutual aid is an important basis for Ethics. it teaches a person to do good not just out of love for his family but because of the recognition that he is a brother to every human being. Therefore, mutual aid fulfills a chief role in the moral progress of humanity.
Mutual Aid! Sweet is the sound of the words. I wish that activity for our
Mutual Aid will not be imposed but will spring out of inner will. Each member will know his responsibility towards this project and will participate actively. They should remember that by evading they wrong not only themselves but also all their friends. Only jointly will we be able to surpass all stumbling blocks and our activity will be very productive.
