The following passage is in Hamelitz, issue #168, page 1773, 13 August 1888:
Brisk D'lita. In Issue 159 of Hamelitz, Mr. David Vigderovitz called our attention to lack of teaching "basics of religion" in the Jewish school supervised by Vikker.
This is a lie.
The supervisor is to be praised for being clever and a great pedagogue. Also his educated wife teaches the girls, in addition to what is taught in school, art and crafts. The minister of education for the district – Sergiyevski – mentioned her name in praise before the great Prince Vladimir Alexandrovitch and his wife, and when they passed on the 24th of June through the street where Vikker's school is located, they received flowers from 2 girls, while the students and teachers were standing and singing the national Hymn "God save the King".
The Great Princess Maria Pavlovna praised publicly this school. As for teaching of "basics of religion" I can testify that it is included in the curriculum of this school and from the day it opened until now the girls have been learning the laws of religion like in all the schools in our land.
